‘Technology in schools should be like electricity – it should go unnoticed’

Technology must be knitted into the fabric of school life and go as unnoticed as electricity, according to a panel of experts.

The panel was speaking at the Bett 2016 educational conference in London this afternoon.

Anne Knock, head of media and communications at Northern Beaches Christian School in Sydney, Australia – one of Bett’s schools of the future – explained the philosophy.

“We don’t talk about electricity in education do we? People when they talk about our school, they say it is technologically advanced. Our principal was quick to see the advantages of technology and was an early adopter of it.

“But in essence, technology is invisible now. Just like electricity, it’s there, it’s an enabler, it makes the connections work.”

Allan Kjaer Andersen, head of Ørestad Gymnasium in Copenhagen, Denmark – also a school of the future – echoed Ms Knock’s comments, saying: “We don’t talk about technology in our school because it is everywhere; we rarely mention it. The most important thing about technology is it makes it possible for the students to collaborate. It makes it possible for teachers to give feedback in a better way.

“It also makes it possible to personalise learning better.”
