A teacher has promised to buy a pair of shoes for every pupil in her school, after winning more than £9,000 on a television game show.
Bri Dredge won A$20,000 (£9,470) on Millionaire Hot Seat, the Australian version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?
The teacher at Yuille Park Community College, in the Australian state of Victoria, has pledged to buy leather shoes for all 200 children at her school to ensure that they have good footwear to see them through the winter.
She had already told the show’s host how she intended to spend the money when she was faced with the question: “First published in 1929, TS Eliot’s famous work is Old Possum’s Practical Book of…what?”
The options were: a) birds; b) cats; c) advice; d) poetry.
Ms Dredge initially chose the fourth option: poetry. But the host asked her to think again. “We want you to win this,” he said. “Are you going to really buy the kids shoes?”
As a result, Ms Dredge changed her answer to “cats”, winning the $20,000 prize.
After her win, Ms Dredge said that having dry feet would help the children’s learning. “I walked into school and every student in the whole school has given me a hug and said ‘thank you’,” she said.
“The look on their faces was worth all the money that I won.”
